Description
This signed Japanese Maki-e lacquer box features a detailed leaping koi with a mother-of-pearl inlaid eye. The artist used silver maki-e to create dynamic waves that wrap around the sides of the box. Inside, dense nashiji (gold-speckled lacquer) gives the interior a rich, reflective finish.
Crafted during the late Meiji period, this piece showcases expert use of hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, and urushi techniques. A rare studio or maker’s mark appears on the base, distinguishing it from similar unsigned works.
