About Royal Oak
Royal Oak began in 1819 when Governor Lewis Cass named the area after a majestic oak tree he believed worthy of royalty. What started as a quiet settlement soon became a growing community rooted in character and connection.
The early 1900s brought rapid change as the railroad, new neighborhoods, and a bustling downtown took shape. With the opening of the Royal Oak Farmers Market in 1925, the city had firmly established itself as a vibrant destination in Metro Detroit.
Today, Downtown Royal Oak blends its historic charm with modern energy. Creative businesses, lively streets, and a welcoming community make it a place where local spirit shines and life is always “now playing.”
