Description
These vintage ceramic alligator salt and pepper shakers capture the playful character that made mid-century Japanese novelty ceramics so popular in American homes. Produced for the export market during the 1950s to early 1960s, the pair features exaggerated cartoon expressions, textured reptile backs, hand-painted scale detailing, and glossy jungle-green glazing.
Their sculptural forms are full of personality, from the oversized eyes and cheerful grins to the animated stance that gives them strong shelf presence. While originally designed as functional tableware, pieces like these are often collected today for their decorative appeal and connection to the golden age of postwar Japanese giftware.
Both shakers retain their original cork stoppers and present in very good vintage condition with no visible chips or cracks noted. A charming addition to a vintage kitchen collection, tropical display, Florida-themed décor, or mid-century novelty ceramic grouping.
