Description
A solid bronze advertising lion produced for H. P. Smith & Son of Woodhull, New York, a funeral establishment founded in the nineteenth century and still in operation today.
The firm’s name and location are hand-etched into the base in cursive script, not machine stamped, indicating early production and small-scale commission. The casting shows period detail and weight appropriate to a desk object of the early 1900s. Surface patina is consistent and undisturbed.
This piece was made for professional use as a desk paperweight. Its scale and mass support that function, and its survival in intact condition adds to its desirability. Identified advertising bronzes tied to continuously operating American businesses are uncommon, particularly from small regional firms.
Its traceable provenance and survival in original form strengthen its collector appeal. Pieces linking early commercial art to a still-operating family business rarely appear on the market.
Dimensions: 5 inches long X 1 inch wide X 2 inches high
