Description
A striking example of Maitland-Smith’s distinctive late-20th-century decorative design, this Model 960 table lamp combines hand-applied tessellated penshell with richly patinated metalwork.
The dramatic domed shade is covered in individually fitted pieces of translucent shell, creating a warm amber glow when illuminated. A pierced metal gallery encircles the shade, ornamented with finely cast lion masks and hanging rings. Four textured supports terminate in classical paw feet above a substantial matching tessellated shell base.
Handcrafted in the Philippines, circa 1980s, the lamp reflects the Neoclassical and Hollywood Regency influences for which vintage Maitland-Smith furnishings and accessories have become highly collectible.
An impressive sculptural object even when unlit—and especially beautiful when illuminated.
